The White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Two-Year Agreement.
In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a lucrative contract for the high-profile player.
Financial Terms and Player Perks
The contract includes a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16M for the next season and $17M for the final year.
Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for earning the league MVP award.
- $500,000 for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for finishing between fourth and tenth.
- An identical bonus for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The contract provides that he will not be optioned to the minors without his permission and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Historical Context
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows get a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, enters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing last in the AL Central but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.
Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, breaking the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His last year was shortened to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Despite recording 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. He started playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third base.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's heroics were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The next night in the title match against the Team USA, he blasted a game-tying shot in the early innings, helping Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The new White Sox addition is slated to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
