The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a key European match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
