The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
