Monte Cook and Monte Cook Will Lead Sessions at Dungeon Master Academy

Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting deeply engaging experiences where professional dungeon masters manage fantasy roleplaying games in old manors in Britain and at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. These all-inclusive trips are highly favored among career game masters who rarely get the moment to join in the game themselves, and they often ask for tips from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from spontaneous storytelling and creating challenges to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the planners began designing a structured way to address these questions, which led to the creation of Dungeon Master University. The debut workshop is set for the start of 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“You can watch countless online tutorials on any topic and gain significant knowledge, but the concept was that there’s just no substitute face-to-face interaction alongside peers in game mastering, where there’s live engagement with seasoned educators and other game masters who are probably in the same boat and seek to enhance their abilities,” stated the program's dean.

Course Offerings and Cost Levels

Game masters can choose from options ranging from $995 to two thousand five hundred dollars, based on the degree of interaction they desire with the experts. The entry-level option includes one of four courses:

  • Core Techniques: Covers the fundamentals of managing a session.
  • Story Arc Development: Is dedicated to designing extended campaigns.
  • Worldbuilding: Concentrates on the development of worlds.
  • Career Building: Designed for dungeon masters who seek to understand more about the roleplaying business.

Every class includes two days of classwork spread over two days.

“The classes are created so that you leave with tangible results, enhanced belief in your abilities, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl explained. “These aren't simple talks and they exceed pre-recorded material. These workshops that you can participate in, gain knowledge from, and then go right back home the next week and apply in your local game.”

Expert Instructors

Most classes are led by a pair of experts. Universe creation is guided by the founder of Monte Cook Games and a renowned campaign designer, jointly leading the art of worldbuilding.

Professional development presents four different teachers, such as a puzzle design specialist, an entertainment professional, and a pioneering DM. The extra instructors is meant to deliver focused advice to students with particular aims.

“Some of them aim to start their own real-play series and display their adventures with the world, several want to publish and develop fresh ideas,” Carl explained. “Others simply wish to ask, What's the path to be a DM at a program like an immersive experience? What capabilities that I need? Can anyone do it?

Premium Packages

A $1.5K premium package provides access to a welcome reception, a starter kit, and a brief one-on-one appointment with a teacher. This marks the inaugural DMU session, though the team has previously run Castle Days during breaks between campaigns at their castle events.

“One could practically host an full two days just on consultation sessions for professional dungeon masters,” Carl said. “It's unclear if that’s the most effective utilization of all participants' schedule – I believe the coursework and the lab work is extremely important – but I believe it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”

The twenty-five hundred dollar top package provides an hour of one-on-one time and the possibility to manage an adventure for a small group plus a teacher, who will then provide notes and coaching.

“The goal is for the teacher to evaluate whichever aspect is concerned with: I struggle with spontaneous decisions or I feel stuck in certain battle scenarios. Can I run a situation for you and get feedback on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl detailed. “Perhaps they want to receive input and guidance on a particular setting that they’ve been creating.”

Coming Developments

Feedback from the inaugural session will help guide upcoming academy workshops. Carl mentioned that potential adjustments could include expanding one-on-one sessions, making it longer to a longer period, or trying out varied class arrangements.

“I expect that we host such events frequently,” Carl said. “I would love to see several DMU sessions in a single year, in multiple places, and in different countries. The feedback has been really terrific. We’re very happy with the results so far and I believe it would be fantastic to be able to do this in collaboration with big conventions.”
