Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
