Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Exits Following Pivot Into Fried Chicken.
A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while diversifying the company into poultry items has been replaced after disagreements with its governing body.
Executive Shake-Up
The former CEO is departing after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a permanent CEO.
Rennie, who worked for the company for over 20 years, had aimed to redirect the UK's leading pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, commenting earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the UK's pizza market. He observed chicken was the fastest-growing menu item in the globe.
Board Tensions
Reports indicate that there was tension between the CEO and the governance team over his approach and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.
Recent Product Introduction
In the autumn, Domino's launched its poultry offering – which Rennie referred to as a “major strategic shift” for the organization – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as scheduled, it views chicken products as an addition to its main pizza offerings.
Board Statement
The Domino's chair, the Domino's chair, commented: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and value creation in our primary operations. We are prioritizing selecting the ideal CEO to lead the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”
Industry Challenges
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said orders dipped by one and a half percent in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it blamed reduced spending in the lead-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in half-year profits.
Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain revealed the closure of 68 restaurants a month ago, after the firm behind its UK venues fell into administration.
Health Initiatives
Adapting to consumer trends towards healthier eating, the company has introduced light items, such as its thin-crust range of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as plant-based and wheat-free options. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A family cheese pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has 909 kcal.
Acting Management
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and had a background at the betting firm William Hill. It is thought that she prefers not to assume the chief executive role permanently.
She said: “We have a number of ongoing growth and operational projects that we will be concentrating on implementing at a rapid rate.”
She added these included additional efforts on the company's procurement system and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.
Domino's is also in need of a long-term CFO until the spring, when Andrea comes aboard from the drinks company C&C Group. In the meantime, Snow is temporary CFO.
