EU Lawmakers Vote to Ban Meat-Based Terms for Vegetarian Products

In a significant vote on Wednesday, MEPs voted by a margin of 355-247 to reserve product terms including "burger" and "sausage" solely for animal-derived foods.

The Decision Signifies

Should this proposal is implemented, common vegetarian items like veggie burgers, tofu steak, and cauliflower schnitzel may need to be renamed across European Union countries.

However, for the restriction to be enforced, it must receive support from a majority of the 27 EU countries, which is far from certain.

The Arguments Surrounding the Proposal

Supporters argue that consumers require clear information and that traditional names must exclusively describe products derived from livestock.

"A steak or a sausage represent goods from our livestock: not from laboratory art or vegetable sources," stated France's MEP Céline Imart.

Critics, led by environmental lawmakers, called the move unnecessary restriction.

"Veggie burgers, wheat schnitzel and soy sausage do not confuse consumers, only certain lawmakers," said Austrian Green MEP Thomas Waitz.

Past Attempts and Judicial Background

This marks another attempt to regulate these names. EU lawmakers rejected a comparable ban in four years ago.

The French government earlier enacted a national ban on meat terms for plant-based foods in recent years, but EU courts determined it invalid under EU law in 2024.

Business and Public Response

Major German retailers including Aldi and Lidl oppose the proposal, cautioning that changing familiar terms would mislead consumers.

Advocacy organizations cite surveys showing that most shoppers understand product labels when products are properly identified as vegan.

"Almost 70% of consumers understand these names as long as products are explicitly labelled vegan or vegetarian," said Irina Popescu, a consumer officer at BEUC.

What Comes Following the Vote

This legislative measure next requires review by EU member states, where it needs to secure majority support to be enacted.

Given the mixed opinions within both lawmakers and the general population, the future of this initiative is still unclear.
