EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
