The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
