Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of undesired presents could be considered a little discourteous – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Auction
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 gifts given to her by world leaders on official trips. This unusual assortment is said to contain objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
The presents, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be auctioned off in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. A date remains to be announced, although the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the proceeds benefiting a selection of charitable causes.
Palazzo Chigi Collection
The presents reportedly stored in a secure area on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.
A complete inventory remains made public, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.

"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
This charitable initiative symbolizes a unconventional way to handle the state presents that build up during a leader's tenure.
