A familiar auction figure is a regular presence at the annual event.

A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.

The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets throughout Japan and abroad.

"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the company president, a regular bidder at the yearly new year's auction.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this businessman is renowned for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past

Following the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "astonished at the amount," stating, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price escalated in no time."

This most recent acquisition surpasses his own historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.

The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.

From Auction to Plate

The record-priced tuna was promptly prepared for diners at the winner's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction ended.

"I believe like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after eating something so lucky as the year starts," shared one satisfied patron.
