Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
