A Pair of Cuba-Headed Relief Sailboats Listed Unaccounted For after Departing Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive search and recovery operation is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Naval Search Operations Launched
Mexico has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying at least 9 personnel, according to a official statement.
The vessels had been expected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.
Background of Relief to the Island
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country grapples with multiple national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with suitable safety systems and communication devices," a representative for the convoy stated.
The nine-person crew are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Recent Aid Shipment
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.
That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and provisions.
Wider Geopolitical Climate
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.
The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba amid power shortages.
Foreign policy tensions have intensified in recent months, with statements from several officials emphasizing the complex nature of relations.
Reacting to previous comments, a high-ranking Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The maritime authorities stated it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the boats and secure the safety of the sailors.
At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
